Collection: Radikon

Radikon is a legend in the world of skin contact natural wines. A maverick in a land of mavericks, Stanko Radikon was a force of nature whose extended maceration wines influenced a generation of winemakers around the world. The town of Oslavia in the Isonzo zone of Friuli, where Radikon is located, is home to a number of talented and individualistic wine makers. From Radikon’s home, you can carry a plate of freshly cooked polenta to Edi Kante (whose wines we have) and Jasko Gravner (another orange wine maverick) and still eat it piping hot.
This region sits right along the Slovenian border, and Radikon's vineyards are in both Italy and Slovenia. Radikon is legendary for their “Slovenian” style of Friuli wines – founded on the values of hand-harvesting, extended skin maceration, large, older barrel fermentations without temperature control, no added yeasts or enzymes, and little or no use of sulfur.
The vineyards were originally planted by Stanko’s grandfather Franz Mikulus with a local favorite, the Ribolla Gialla grape. In 1948, Stanko’s parents, who had inherited the property from his mother’s father, planted Merlot, (Tocai) Friulano and Pinot Grigio. Though Stanko passed away in 2016, his wife Suzana and their children Saša and Ivana maintain their family’s land and their father's legacy.
In 2010, Radikon launched the 'S' line of wines, which are Saša's new take on his these wines, with noticeably shorter amounts of maceration (8 to 14 days versus three months like Stanko + his grandfather before him). They ferment in smaller vessels and age only 18 months before bottling. Furthermore, they are bottled in traditional 750ml bottles and see a small addition of sulfur at bottling. Today, these represent about 55% of the estate's total production. Saša has also decided to omit the Pinot Grigio from the traditional "Oslavje" blend, which is now 50/50 Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The Pinot Grigio now exclusively produces an" S" wine called "Sivi". This cuvée started as of the 2016 vintage; it means "grey" in Slovenian, in reference to the grayish-pink color of the grape's skin. A red "S" wine called "RS" has also joined the lineup and is a blend of Merlot and Pignolo.
